Subcontracting Academia: The Syrian Refugee Research Industry

  • Sijal Insitute for Arabic Language and Culture #1 15 Umar Ibn al-Khattab Street Amman Jordan (map)

Sijal Institute of Arabic Language and Culture Cordially Invites you to a talk by Dr Mayssoun Sukarieh (King's College London) under the title:

Subcontracting Academia: Alienation, Exploitation and Disillusionment in the Syrian Refugee Research Industry As the political economy of social science research shifts, subcontracted research assistants are taking over an ever growing part of the research process. In this talk, prominent anthropologist Dr Sukarieh discusses the experiences of local research assistants employed on international research projects on Syrian refugees, particularly those led by academics in the UK. While refugee research is framed as a noble project of helping the world’s most vulnerable, local assistants speak critically of their sense of alienation, exploitation and disillusionment with the research they work on.
